I Hate Mending

There! That makes me feel better! I...
...detest
...abhor
...despise
mending.

I'm sure those of you who are virtuous mothers are shaking their heads and wondering what is the matter with me. I don't know where I missed it, but the pile of mending in my sewing center makes me cringe with hatred.

Why do I wait until all of Allison's dresses are missing a button before I finally, grudgingly get out my needle and thread? Why does a dress hang for two years in my closet with chopped off sleeves that are only waiting for one seam? Why do John's Sunday pants lay over my bedroom chair for weeks before I finally get around to sewing the loophole back on?

I've always hated repairing clothes. When I learned to sew and sewed my sleeve in upside down, I would have rather started all over than to tear out the one little seam.

Mending is such a tedious chore. But today, when I finally got around to sewing on six buttons on six dresses, sewing up a hole in the back of another, and zigzagging around two pockets that were coming loose, I realized it had only taken me about fourty-five minutes. And the time I spent before dreading the task was worse than actually doing it. I hope next time it won't look so big. And now Alli has five more dresses!!! I'll let you in on a big, deep, dark secret---I hate ironing, too!!!!

Vernon had I'm-not-sure-how-many-pairs of socks, white and black alike, waiting to be mended in the toes....they finally got thrown away because he has enough socks that I decided he could just do without those.....then I think about CAM and their outreaches and feel wasteful after I've done that!

As far as ironing.....it gets as hot doing that chore as standing in front of the sink for very long. Thankfully I rarely have to use the iron.

Oh my. I love mending. This is my sign from God that I need to come visit you in Poland, and you need to save all your mending til then.

I have good memories of mending... at your childhood home, with your little sis on my lap! And now she's all grown and married. :} I don't really mind mending, but it's sure an easy thing to put off. I'd have more dresses myself if I JUST DID IT!!

I hear ya. I have a stash of mending that I need to pay some attention too..once.
I'm thankful for your sympathies. I was feeling quite good about it until I get to comments four and five. There are some people that actually enjoy mending??? Yes, Dorcas, it is a sign from God. The mending will be awaiting your arrival!!! :)

Oh, I'm the same way!I will wait and wait...there's just something about a 5- 10 minute job that's so hard to do.:-) I especially hate shortening/lengthening pants. And then I feel so virtuous after it's all done!

The funniest thing happened. I clicked on your name on the comments on my blog thinking it was another Laura that read my site. I absent mindedly read your profile and thought, "Hmm i wonder if I should let Laura know there's another lady in Poland with five kids doing mission work." Duh! It didnt dawn on me until I clicked to your page who you were!

Now lets just say that mending and I have never gotten cozy with each other. I hate mending and sewing. I remeber one time as a girl I made a new dress and the first Sunday I wore it Pop pronounced the sleeves too short and told me that there was no need to try to get liberal in his household because it wouldnt work and that I was never to wear that dresa gain until I got those sleeves sufficiently below the elbows.

I told him I didn't purposely make the sleeves to not cover the elbow but that I just didnt cut it out right and sew it right. I'll never forget how he grinned and said, "Well Tammy coming from you I believe thats exactly what happened. Now get in the car or we'll be late." Lol Obviously he was wise enough to be more concerned about the intent of the ehart rather than the letter of the law. When he discovered there was no evil motive it was okay.

Now Robin, on the other hand, is a perfect seamstress thus would have never gotten by with sleeves not covering the elbow! :)
That's too funny! I love your sewing story, Mrs. Darling. Don't even talk to me about sewing!!! I have ripped out so many seams, sewed too many clothes that don't fit, and have had such trials that I don't enjoy that either.

Do I Feel Loved or What?

More times than not, my December 17th birthday nearly gets forgotten with all the busy Christmas festivities that try to crowd it out. But a few times in my life I have been totally surprised and this year was one of them. We three American ladies got together on Friday for our annual "candy and cookie" day when we make American goodies to give as gifts to our friends here. I thought it a bit strange that everyone was wishing me a cheerful "Happy Birthday" first thing in the morning when I arrived at my friends house. What are they thinking? It's a day early! Oh, well, I thought, they just don't want to forget this year. But I was secretly thinking about the night out that my husband had planned for the two of us the follwing evening. (At a romantic Italian restaurant in Warsaw, at that!) And I thought about the brunch that my oldest son promised to make on my special day. (Imagine that he is old enough to give me such a gift!) The morning passed and at time...
